Dating With Depression

Dating is an emotional roller coaster in itself, let alone dating with depression. Okay, so you suffer from depression? But guess what, you are in very good company. Each year the population of depression increases. Major depression affects nearly 15 million Americans . About 3% or 6 million Americans suffer from manic depression or bipolar depression each year.

If you are one who suffers with depression, it’s important to remember to have fun and enjoy yourself while dating. Focusing on your depression rather than your mate can undoubtedly lead to more heartache and extra days spent indoors on the bed.

The most important thing to remember if you suffer from depression and you are dating is that your depression does not define you. It is a part of who you are, but it is not everything you are!

Dating Preparation

* Remember to take anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications for your major depression if you have them prescribed. Some depression medication, such as Ativan and Valium, act fast to relieve anxiety that you’ll have ahead of your date.

* Use positive self-talk to encourage yourself to have a successful date. An example of a positive “I” statement that can be used in preparation for your date is “I will do the best I can on my date tonight.”

* Relieve any last-minute anxiety about dating with your major depression by practicing deep-breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation. Spend about 30 minutes before your date to get your mind focused and relaxed.

* Dress nicely and groom yourself well. Making yourself appear attractive should be one of the goals of your date regardless of your major depression.

* Keep Expectations Realistic

* Be as comfortable as you can on your date while coping with your major depression. If possible, put aside all thoughts about your condition and focus on having fun and enjoying the moment with the other person.

* Communicate openly about your depression to the person you’re dating. This might not be a conversation starter, but bringing it up is a good idea if you see the date leading to a second one or a potential start of a romantic relationship.
